The emergence of virtual worlds like Second Life, coupled with the rise of remote work during the pandemic, has given rise to a wide range of new methods for experiencing and engaging with the world. This evolution is being driven by Gen Z, the first generation to grow up in a digitally native and globally connected environment, whose behaviors and attitudes are already shaping the development of the metaverse.
Additionally, forward-thinking startups and early-adopting companies are pioneering various compelling use cases within the metaverse, including immersive training, accelerated product design, and more.
The term "Metaverse" gained widespread recognition when Facebook underwent a corporate rebranding and changed its name to Meta in October 2021 (Tucci, 2023). Along with the rebranding, Meta revealed its intentions to invest a minimum of $10 billion in the Metaverse concept during that year.
Gather.Town is a web-conferencing software similar to Zoom, but with an additional feature that allows participants to visually perceive the virtual "room" they and others occupy. It enables users to move around and engage with other attendees based on their respective positions in the virtual space, mimicking real-life interactions. This platform facilitates seamless transitions between group discussions, individual chats, and returning to the main speaker, replicating the experience of a physical conference or gathering. Instead of being transferred to a breakout room as in Zoom, Gather.Town allows users to navigate their online avatars to tables and chairs, sit down, and initiate conversations.
Gather Town plays a role in making the Metaverse a reality by offering a platform that combines virtual reality, augmented reality, and real-time interactions (Services, n.d.). It provides a virtual space that resembles a physical environment, allowing users to gather and interact as if they were physically present. By enabling participants to move around, have conversations, and interact with objects in the virtual space, Gather Town creates a sense of immersion and social connection.
This aligns with the Metaverse's vision of an interconnected virtual reality where users can engage in various activities, collaborate, and communicate seamlessly. Gather Town's emphasis on spatial audio and visual representation enhances the feeling of being part of a shared virtual environment, contributing to the realization of the Metaverse's objectives.
